The English faculty took ownership of their new block, Eliot block, this week. Eliot block was named for George Eliot, whose real name was Mary Anne Evans. George Eliot was a novelist, poet and journalist of the Victorian age who could only succeed in her chosen writing career by pretending to be a man. We wanted to celebrate George Eliot both as an inspirational writer and as an icon of perseverance and refusal to accept failure; both traits we encourage and expect to see in our students.
